Scaffold Loads: Calculating for Safety

Scaffold Loads: Calculating for Safety

Properly constructed scaffolds must support workers, tools, materials, and environmental loads. There are two main load categories:

  • Actual Loads: The weight present on the scaffold at any time (workers, materials, etc.).
  • Allowable Loads: The maximum weight the scaffold can safely support, determined by engineering analysis or testing.

Duty ratings help classify platforms:

  • Light Duty: 122 kg/m² (25 lb/ft²)
  • Medium Duty: 244 kg/m² (50 lb/ft²)
  • Heavy Duty: 367 kg/m² (75 lb/ft²)

Always compare actual loads to allowable loads to prevent overloading and ensure compliance with safety factors (typically 4:1 in Canada).
